Dan Patrick

Considered by many observers as the most conservative member of the Texas Senate, Dan Patrick has proven that one person can make a difference in Austin. That difference has been made by keeping campaign promises and sticking to his principles. In only two years, Dan has received numerous awards, including "Legislator of the Year" by several organizations, as well as the top award from both the Texas' National Federation of Independent Business and Texans for Lawsuit Reform.

In his first session, Senator Patrick passed a bill placing IN God WE TRUST permanently in the Senate Chamber and was the Senate author to place "Under God" in our state pledge.  This past session, Dan passed nearly 40 bills.  One of his top accomplishments was passing the biggest tax cut passed in any state in 2009, a $172 million tax cut freeing 40,000 small businesses from the state business tax.

Four of Dan's biggest accomplishments directly impacted his district. Dan helped lead a coalition to create The University Center off of Hwy. 249 on the former Hewlett Packard campus. This center will make college more affordable and accessible to thousands in his district, offering academic study programs from the University of Houston, Sam Houston, and Prairie View A&M, all at this Lone Star College location.

Dan also passed his top two priority bills for the district. Legislation requiring back-up power for water districts was passed into law. This legislation will help ensure we do not repeat the loss of water experienced during Hurricane Ike. He then passed a bill to give the county more local power to regulate and shut down sexually oriented businesses.

Immediately after the legislative session in June, Senator Patrick led the effort to save the 20% added homestead exemption in Cy-Fair ISD, saving the average homeowner nearly $700 a year.

For the second time in two sessions, Dan also passed an ultrasound bill in the Texas Senate. This legislation would have required any doctor performing an abortion to conduct an ultrasound and allow the woman the option to view it before performing the abortion. Unfortunately, it died in the House once again.

He authored and co-authored constitutional amendments to bring more fairness and standardization to the appraisal process and to promote the better operation of emergency service districts across the state.

Senator Patrick currently serves as Vice Chair of the Education and Higher Education committees. In addition, he serves on the Health and Human Services, Criminal Justice, and Intergovernmental Relations. He is known for his hard work ethic, being prepared on the issues, and being one of the best debaters on the Senate floor.

Host of a popular daily talk radio show in Houston and Dallas, Dan also recently produced an award-winning Christian film, The Heart of Texas, which was named best film made in Texas in 2009. He also authored the bestselling book, The Second Most Important Book You Will Ever Read. In his spare time, he enjoys playing the piano and guitar.

Dan has enjoyed 34 years of marriage to Jan, and is the proud father of two children, Ryan and Shane. Their son Ryan is an assistant D.A. in Harris County and their daughter Shane is attending nursing school.
